Want Dinner And A Movie? This Clever Pizza Box Has Both

Nothing says Friday night (or, if we”re being real, any night) like pizza and a movie. But instead of having to crowd around a laptop or even watch it on your regular TV, Pizza Hut Hong Kong, in partnership with Ogilvy & Mather, has developed a way for friends and families to enjoy the big screen from the comfort of their own homes, all while sharing a pizza!

They”ve developed a pizza box that doubles as a movie projector. All you need is your smartphone!

Inside the “pizza saver,” which is the official name for the little tripod thing that comes in a pizza box, there”s a magnifying lens. This is popped out, and the pizza is removed and distributed to the hungry folk. A hole in the front of the box is then punched out from the cardboard. The lens fits right inside.

Then all you need to do is place your phone in the box with the screen facing the lens. The tripod part of the pizza saver is used to keep it steady. Moving the phone closer to or away from the lens will adjust the focus. Keep in mind that the phone”s screen must be locked to play the movie upside down, since the image will flip when light passes through the lens. We recommend wiping everything down with a paper towel to keep any grease off your phone.

The boxes come in four designs based on movie genres, including horror, sci-fi, romance, and action. (All with a pizza twist, of course.)

The pizza box projector debuted in Hong Kong back in April as part of a promotion for Pizza Hut”s “double pizza” offer. If it catches on, we might start seeing them in other areas of the world as well.

If you want the big-screen feel of a projector but you don”t live in Hong Kong, you can make one of these smartphone projectors yourself using a box, a lens, and your phone. You can also buy a kit online.
